Ancistrus triradiatus is slender, small, and plain in color. The dark brown catfish has a faint spotted pattern. Males show robust antlers with thin, branching tentacles. In contrast to the common bristlenose, the females have obvious short tentacles. In the case of the huge female shown on page 318, these were even branched at the end. Only the anal fin of specimens from the upper reaches of the Río Meta has three soft rays as per the description, forms from other localities mostly have four.
