The clear identification of the species was difficult because the holotype is badly damaged. More recent material from the Maroni and Suriname River were finally identified as this species. Accordingly, the species is dark brown in color with larger yellowish-brown spots. In the aquarium, the species usually remains significantly smaller than the maximum size.
