Medium-sized, slender and somewhat flattened, with dark brown lines on the body and a dark reticulated pattern on the head. Most specimens from the Rio Gurupi are more attractive than those from the Rio Piriá, which are more brown than gray. Fins with dark bands, caudal fin with an orange brown seam. The ventral side is lighter in color, with a dark marbled pattern.
