Uniquely colored, with a very coarse black reticulated pattern on reddish brown ground. In contrast to similar forms, even older specimens dont lose their attractive colors, even though younger specimens are the most striking in color. The species has a comparatively wide body. The tentacles on the head of the males correspond more or less to those of our standard brown aquarium bristlenose catfish.
