In the habitat, this highly variable medium-sized bristlenose catfish shows a contrasting dark reticulated pattern on light brown ground, however, aquarium specimens fade somewhat. The size of the reticulated pattern varies, depending on the locality where the fish were collected. The males have relatively "normally” expressed tentacles.
