With a total length of around 9-12 inches, this is one of the largest bristlenose catfishes. The males have impressive tentacles. Dark brown to black, with fine yellowish dots on body and fins, and with a typical black spot on the membrane of the dorsal fin at the base between the spine and the first branching ray. Younger specimens are particularly attractive in color, with reddish brown seams in the dorsal and caudal fins.
