This small to medium-sized, brown bristlenose catfish develops a striking mosaic or honeycomb pattern when it feels comfortable. The fins later develop attractive reddish-brown bands. Young Ancistrus sp. (L 111) have a white-edged caudal fin. This edge then disappears completely with age. Males develop a strong antler of tentacles. The ventral side with dark-edged light spots.
