Names and synonyms
Common Bristlenose Catfish, Brown Bristlenose Catfish, often mistakenly called Blue Bristlenose Catfish, A. dolichopterus or A. temminckii. However, this is based on a confusion with the real A. dolichopterus (L 183), which can show a bluish sheen.
Common bristlenose catfish are medium-sized, quite slender, and, like many other species, display light brown to light gray spots on a dark brown background. While the males develop a very large antler of long and partially branched tentacles, the females at best only have very short appendages on the edge of their snouts. Males also develop short, fleshy tentacles on the elongated pectoral fin spines.

Ancistrus sp. "yellow / black-eyed" – a yellow captive-bred form

"Yellow / black-eyed" refers to a well-established yellow captive-bred form of the Ancistrus "aquarium strain". The typical look is a yellow base colour with dark eyes. In the trade, this form is often sold under inconsistent labels.

Important note: "L144" / "Gold" / "Blue-eyed lemon"

Labels such as "L144", "Gold" or "Blue-eyed lemon" are used inconsistently in the hobby and trade. This profile describes the common captive-bred "yellow / black-eyed" form and summarizes typical mix-ups.

Care & breeding
