Names and synonyms
Common bristlenose catfish, brown bristlenose pleco, sometimes erroneously Blue pleco, A. dolichopterus, or A. temminckii. This is due to a confusion with the true A. dolichopterus (L 183), which may have a blueish shimmer.
Common bristlenose catfish are medium-sized, with a slender body, and have like many other species light brown to light gray spots on dark brown ground. Whereas the males have impressive antlers formed by long, sometimes branching tentacles, the females only have short appendages around their snout rim, if any. The males also have short fleshy tentacles on the extension of their pectoral fin spikes.
