The live coloration of this small species is deep black with tiny white spots, and a dark spot on the base of the fin membrane between the spine and the first branching ray of the dorsal fin. The upper-, and lowermost tip of the caudal fin may be white, or cream-colored. The variant from the Río Parucito has yellowish dots, and no basal spot, as a rule. The juveniles of this form have white and orange-brown fin seams, and dots in the fins.
