The German ichthyologist Albert Günther (1864) described this species according to its nomenclature (leucostictus means white dotted) as black with white dots. Fisch-Muller noted in her dissertation that the holotype of the species was obviously mixed up, as it showed neither the described size nor coloration. Thus, de Souza, Taphorn & Armbruster (2019) could now only describe this species as light brown with medium-sized lighter spots. The spots are irregular on the head and circular on the hindquarters. The specimen shown here displays the now differentially described coloration. De Souza et al. state the distribution area as the middle and upper Essequibo River in Guyana. Such animals are not known in the hobby.
