References
Günther (1869); Regan (1904)
This species puzzles us in many ways. The holotype is in bad shape, and the description by Günther doesn't conform to modern standards at all. Even the redescription by Regan hasn't helped much. Günther describes the species as uniformly black and relatively large, and we know it comes from the Peruvian part of the Amazon, and typically has eight soft rays in its dorsal fin. Regan describes a black spot in the dorsal fin base between the first and second ray. The lack of details and the very general locality description renders a redescription, let alone clear identification of this phantom impossible.
