Valenciennes (1840)
French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes puzzles us with his description of Ancistrus erinaceus by giving Chile as a "highly doubtful" type locality, however, so far, no Loricariid catfishes are known from there. Furthermore, he gives no hints whatsoever to the live coloration of the species, and only describes some bodily characteristics, which makes classifying this catfish very difficult. This species will probably puzzle ichthology for years to come. The holotype shown here, the only type of the species, is in poor condition. However, it can be seen that the body structure of the species is somewhat broadened and flattened.
