The White-Seam Bristlenose Catfish is easy to identify by its black base color with fine white dots and a white seam on the dorsal and caudal fins, which is retained even in adult animals. Freshly imported specimens often show a greatly reduced white dotting and reduced fin seams. With a maximum length of more than 25 cm, it is one of the largest Ancistrus species. Another special feature is the increased number of dorsal fin rays. The dorsal fin is usually supported by 9 (rarely 8 or 10) branched rays. Most other species have only 7.
