This Ancistrus is easy to identify: Its basic color is black with tiny white dots, and the dorsal and caudal fins have a white seam even when adult. In newly imported specimens, the dots and fin seams may be strongly reduced. With a maximum length of almost 10 inches, this is one of the largest Ancistrus species. Another characteristic is the enlarged number of dorsal fin rays. The dorsal fin is supported by nine (or, more rarely, eight or ten) branching rays, unlike most other species, which only have seven.
