This relatively small light to dark brown species has irregular light-colored zones, and roundish spots. It has a highly characteristic, extremely slender body shape, and a roundish caudal fin. It has strikingly short pectoral fins, and the elongate adipose fin is carinated. The males have a great number of robust tentacles.
