This unusually colored bristlenose catfish has an elongated body. The species shows black dots or lines on a gray-brown background. Specimens from the type locality are black-spotted, while the fishes from Panama show black lines. The dorsal and caudal fins have dark edges. A dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin between the first and second rays is conspicuous. With a total length of almost 8 inches, this is quite a large species. The strongly keeled bony plates on the sides of the body are characteristic.
