The live coloration of this species is described as dark and light brown speckled with small white spots along the entire body length. When the fish feel comfortable in the aquarium, the small spots are even light yellowish-brown in color. The spots on the fins are larger and the same color. In younger specimens, the caudal fin is obviously brightly bordered. The males of this slender and elongated species develop long and rather thin tentacles, which can be branched. Females with short tentacles on the edge of the snout.
