This species has an extraordinarily wide and flat body, and uncommonly thick unbranching tentacles. Females have shorter appendages along their snout rim. Most specimens come from habitats near Altamira, home to the mostly black variant. Further upstream, specimens with fine white spots can be found, and there are transitional forms with washed-out spots.
