The life coloration of this small species is described as deep black with fine white dots. Between the spine and the first branched ray of the dorsal fin, the animals show a dark spot at the base on the fin membrane. The upper and lower tips of the caudal fin are sometimes white or cream-colored. In the variant occurring in the Río Parucito, the dots are yellowish and the base spot is largely absent. In this form, the juveniles show orange-brown edges and dots in the fins in addition to white fin edges.
