Ancistrus malacops is medium-sized, with a characteristic coloration: brown, with fine light-colored spots, which get finer towards the tail. Larger light-colored spots in the fins, forming bands. The caudal fin of adult specimens has orange-brown to white tips, younger specimens have a wide orange-brown seam.
