Pérez & Viloria (1994)
Besides the two cave-dwelling bristlenose catfish species from Brazil, we have a representative from Venezuela as well, however, not much is known about this catfish. It originates from the Cueva de Los Laureles in the Maracaibo basin in the system of the Río Socuy in the federal state of Zulia. This very small, colorless species is said to be closely related to A. martini, which is also distributed in the region. Until now, little was known about this species apart from the first description, in which only black and white illustrations of this species were presented. In April 2008, however, Galán, Herrera & Rincón undertook an expedition into the interior of the cave system and were able to photograph Ancistrus galani in its habitat. Named in honor of the sadly deceased biologist Carlos Galán, who was one of Venezuela's most competent speleologists and had collected the species.
Further information (such as origin, keeping, care and breeding) aboutAncistrus galani can be found in our new book about the loricariid catfish of the Ancistrus genus.
