Steindachner describes the coloration or preserved specimens as follows: upper side light grayish brown, with a net of dark purple lines, more closely together on the head than on the body. The lines disappear in specimens over 2.7 inches in length, and head and body trunk grayish purple, with some light colored blurry large spots on the upper part of the body. The tips of the caudal fin are light blue. The live coloration is dark brown, the large blurry spots on the body are clearly discernible in the aquarium specimen depicted. The tips of the caudal fin are cream-colored in the live coloration. Unlike most bristlenose catfishes, A. damasceni as only three soft fin rays in its anal fin.
