This is a rather high-backed, larger species, dark brown in color with white to yellowish spots and a sloping caudal fin, the lower lobe of which is not strongly elongated. A characteristic feature is a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin between the first and second rays, which, however, is also found in other white-spotted species. Younger specimens show reddish-brown edges of the dorsal and caudal fins, which disappear first in the dorsal.
