Unlike other mountain species, this rather large bristlenose catfish has a decidedly round head, and a slightly flattened body shape. Its brown body is strewn with light-colored spots the size of its pupil, or larger. Apparently the spots get smaller as the fish age. The teeth have only one point, in contrast to those of most other species, and the ventral side is white, without bony plates. Size and body shape of the L 509 shown by Evers correspond exactly with the description of this species, as do its coloration, the bare ventral side and its teeth.
