The live coloration of this small species is a deep black, with tiny white spots. There is a dark spot on the base of the fin membrane between the spine and the first branching ray of the dorsal fin. The caudal fin of juvenile A. nudiceps has a white seam widening strongly towards its ends, In semiadult fish, only the upper and lower tips of the caudal fin are white, or cream-colored.
