This relatively large species grows around 7.8 inches in length. It is typically dark brown, strewn with lots of small reddish-brown spots on fins and body, and has eight branching rays in its dorsal fin (most other species only have seven). The males have many rather long tentacles, which may branch at the tips. The dorsal and caudal fins of the juveniles have a reddish-brown and white seam, which disappears as they grow.
